Traveler’s Tales. They make good games, right? Well…not always. Before they started the runaway video game success that is the franchised Lego games, they made a few missteps. Not the least of which is a quick cash-in game of a cash-in TV show. Enter Buzz Lightyear of Star Command for the Gameboy Color. The game is based off the Disney cartoon, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which is based off the Buzz Lightyear character from Pixar’s Toy Story films. So already this is sounding like a bad idea.
First off is the gameplay. There is none. Each level tasks you with ‘chasing’ the villain through a linear stage till they reach the end, where you then have to take out the villain to succeed. The thing is, its not really a chase; you can actually beat the villain to the end of the level and then have to wait for them to show up for the gun fight. You can also pick up coins scattered about to ‘buy’ virtually useless weapon or other upgrades from little ‘panels’ also scattered about the level. Re-spawning enemies litter each level and they are annoyingly tough to kill, especially with the atrocious aiming system. In fact, its almost better to just shuffle through the level (Buzz apparently doesn’t run) and completely ignore all enemies.

Unfortunately the graphics don’t even try to hold up their end of this pathetic bargain. Most sprites are bland with one or two colors max. Buzz himself looks like a moldy doughboy. The levels are bland and completely linear with little to no scenery. The sound is even pathetic and annoying.
All in all, if you have fond memories of Toy Story, do not play Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. The game is so completely broken it’s not even worthy of the Lightyear name.
