I personally would have thought Ecto-Cooler would have been the Twilight Zone drink of choice in the 80′s.
I think the problem with anthologies is they’re best enjoyed at their own pace, when one is in the mood for it. Frequently the stories can be very heavy and sometimes even cerebrial. After a hard day of work, a lot of people I know like to tune out which is not what you watch a show like the Twilight Zone for. Worse most the audiance looking for a show like this comes home and reads a book rather then turning on the TV so until someone tells them about the show they are unlikely to watch it on its own. Well that is just my 2-cents anyway.
Great show, and what a treat to get a Retroist podcast today. I, too, had a Twilight Zone ritual. I had to have Sprite, Little Ceasars Pizza, and my Starbots. I waited all Friday for the show, watching the clock on the wall of my middle school classroom until I would be out, and then watching it again at home until 8 (?) PM. It was the gateway to Chiller Theater, which would be on later that night, and Saturday Nightmares which would be on the next day. Good times.
Fantastic podcast, as always. I didn’t exactly have ritual for watching the series…unless you count telling my family to keep it down so I could watch the show! ;)
@Kris I see where you are coming from with anthology TV. Perhaps with new formats for delivery of shows, challenging program can find an online niche.
@Doug and Vic I still find myself creating rituals for the shows that I watch. Now though, with DVRs I can really tailor make the “when” aspect of the ritual which has allowed me to marge the dinner hour more effectively with shows that are well past when I feel comfortable eating dinner.
Hey man, thanks for doing this one. I loved this version of the Twilight Zone. I was kindergarten age when it first came on and my Dad watched it. There were a few things that I picked up that are forever burned in my memory. In a good way!
A few summers ago I was glad when I found I could catch it on the channel Chiller. Don’t know if they still air it or if it still exists, but hot damn along with Monsters and Tales from The Darkside it made for some great TV watching.
Glad you liked the show Vincent. I wasn’t sure their would be much interest in a show about the 1985 version, but I am glad to see I was and am not the only fan of this iteration.
It was great to hear about this version of the series.
I caught some of it back then but, like you said on the podcast, I’m one of those viewers who catches anthology shows on syndication runs more often than not.
Mebbe it’s that they tend to air either late at night – perfect for freaky stuff – or they play daily for a few weeks and you get into a viewing habit more easily.
I also gotta say I particularly enjoy Peachy’s dirge-like music in between certain segments of this podcast (and some of your other ones).
Well, I love *all* these sounds, but this piece reminded me of The Residents, of which I’m a fan.
