Dynamite Entertainment has released The Bionic Man #1. The new mini-series adapts an unproduced screenplay by Kevin Smith that updates the classic action-adventure television series of the 1970s, The Six Million Dollar Man. The series is written by Smith and Phil Hester.
It’s great to see this franchise get revived. It’s always been a favorite of mine and it’s been far too long since anything new came from it. The issue can be found in comic shops or online retailers.
The story is set in the present day and a few tweaks have been made to streamline it for the comic book format. I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t go into details about the issue.
Alex Ross illustrated the main cover and Jonathan Lau did the interior art. There are several other alternate covers by other artists that are more rare. Ross has been busy this year as he also does the cover art for the Rocketeer Adventures.
I want this to be in my hands!!! How awesome! Steve Austin was my idol as a kid.
“We can rebuild him!” Man those words still send chills down my spine. I absolutely loved the 6 Million Dollar Man when it originally aired. To my young eyes, the special effects were about the best on television. Steve’s bionic eye made me want to gouge my own eye out to get a bionic one.
I have rambled on and on about the toys in these forums before so I won’t go there again, but I will say that dollar for dollar the Steve Austin 12 inch doll/action figure was the best deal around. Bionic eye, check. Bionic arm, check. Space rocket, yep!
This comic is a very promising start to what I hope will be a great ongoing series. I just have to wonder why, with remakes like the frickin Brady Bunch out there, that we have not gotten a new 6 Million Dollar Man movie? They better hurry if they want any kind of Lee Majors cameo, and good old Oscar Goldman passed on a few years ago. With todays special effects, they could do so much more with a new movie. Plus they have a built in bad guy in Bigfoot!
Have you guys purchased the complete series on DVD? And I believe Richard Anderson is still alive. He’s interviewed on the DVD set which just came out last November so it’s recent.
And I don’t know about using today’s effects for remaking it. The slow-motion is awesome and works as a concept. Today I’m sure he’d speed like Clark on Smallville.
And I had a bunch of the toys too. I’m really considering starting to collect all things bionic related.
It’s great to see Steve Austin back in the game.
Both the series and wonderful toy line were perfection in its heyday, so I’m kind of hesitant about a big-screen approach (or mauling) of one of my favorite bionic heroes (Jamie Summers is right next to Col. Austin as bionic icons – that dastardly Maskatron quickly follows).
But as a comic book series? Cover by Alex Ross? Written by a fanboy?

I read it as soon as I got home from the comic shop, Vic. I didn’t want to post any spoilers though. It’s good. A few things are tweaked and condensed from the TV franchise.
