Disney’s Next Animated Movie…Is About An 8-Bit Arcade Character!

Thanks to both First Showing.Net and Io9 for the heads up on this exciting news from the D23 Expo!

Disney’s next animated movie scheduled to hit theaters November 2012 just happens to deal with an 8-Bit Donkey Kong type villain named Wreck-It Ralph. Check out the arcade cabinet that Disney presented at the Expo…

The reports of the 4 minutes of footage from the D23 Expo state that Asteroids is mentioned as well as one of the ghosts from Pac-Man making an appearance at a support group for 8-Bit villains entitled, Bad-Anon where their motto is “One game at a time.”.

Disney has released an official description of the movie:
“Wreck-It Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan-win a medal-but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade?”

The movie does seem interesting, but I would like to know more about it. Really seems like something I would like, and I LOVE that this is actually going to be Animated rather than CGI, especially considering that it is based on Video Games. I would hope that they do show characters from other classic arcade games, but other than the Pac-Man Ghosts mentioned in the post I highly doubt it, either way the movie seems wicked!

I was really hoping that Disney would be able to pull themselves out of the slump they’ve been in for the last few years. Mars Needs Moms, Alice In Wonderland, Race To Witch Mountain, and of course the High School Musical movies were just horrendous.

I don’t typically rush out to see the new Disney films, but this one seems tailor made to my tastes. Can’t wait!
