“I am Astar” The Canadian Robot PSA from the 1980s

A robot jumping and flipping through spinning metal and danger at every turn…what movie or Tv show is this? Oh it is for war amputees? Oh…

Wow, this is hard not too watch again and again. I never saw this growing up, but I would have found it as bizarre then as I do now.

  1. I remember those ads. They showed them all the time. I remember thinking they were kind of strange, even as a kid.

Rewatching as an adult, they’re still strange. Astar reminds me of the character Robert Joy played in Millennium.

I remember this ad very well, growing up and still residing in Ontario. I always thought is was very cool and that the animation was so futuristic and way ahead of its time. I didn’t think it was strange at all, only effective and straight to the point.

Thanks for posting and bringing back childhood memories.

    Thanks for the memories, Retroist!
Yeah, saw this ad many times back then and, like Mark said, it was strange then and still is now.
I’m still amazed at the impressive effects and how I can’t tell what’s animated, practical, or CG.

And yeah, lotsa cool stuff here in these parts.
    But no Donald Duck OJ!
    Dang the US-Canada trade wars.
I’m joining the rebel forces for that quacky juicy cause.
