This commercial came out in 1983 and probably was still running during the crash. I was pretty hardcore into Atari, but you have to admit, they paint a pretty irresistible portrait with this ad.
Colecovision Commercials Knocked my Socks Off

This was my 2nd console and quite a step up, graphically, from my trusty old VCS.
But despite some killer titles like Donkey Kong, which played well, I always found the movement control kind of clunky. That kind of changed when I plugged in the Wico joystick I used with Atari. But still, not as smooth as it could have been.
But the ad campaign sold me on its virtues, truly.
And I shared the love between all my electronic machines of joy production.
Had oodles of fun with it (and probably 50% of that was with Miner 2049er from Big Five Software).
Great ad that totally blew me away when it aired. My 2600 went from being a prized posession to a piece of dated technology in my eyes. Sadly, I never did get a working Colecovision. A few years ago, I picked up a unit cheap on eBay, but it was DOA and I later sold it for parts. Someday I’ll be able to play Donkey Kong in style….
I wonder if they ever got their FCC approval for that keyboard knob.
I have all of those controllers :)
