Boy I can sure relate to this, but in my case, it was Super Mario Bros. that I think changed everything. When I watched my older, more experienced cousin rescue Princess Toadstool, it didn't even really sink in right away how much of a change that was, but it was a shocking moment none the less. Later, when that same cousin called and shared the famous Konami code with me, which enabled me to traipse all the way into Contra's Level 8: Alien's Lair for the first time, I was forced by my racing pulse and super-heated blushing cheeks to turn off the NES. I couldn't handle the pressure and anxiety of facing Red Falcon -- at the END OF THE GAME omg.

Great article with a great point. Personally, I've always preferred games with a definite ending. My favorite on the 2600 was Pitfall II - which had a definite conclusion.
