You know it as the ultra-cheesy paean to believing in yourself, but Whitney Houston didn’t originate “Greatest Love of All.” Linda Creed, best known for writing pretty much ever hit the Stylistics and Spinners ever had, wrote it in 1977 as an act of self-empowerment in her fight against breast cancer. The song was recorded that year by lite-jazz man-god George Benson for the soundtrack of The Greatest, the Muhammad Ali biopic in which Ali played himself. So in that sense, the greatest love of all is punching George Forman in the face. Here’s Benson’s original:
