1988 Inside Edition Story on Nintendo

Young-Bill-OReilly

In 1988 parents were still baffled by the spell that video games had cast over their children. It would take one more generation before the earliest video game players began to become parents themselves, so the media was still a hotbed of speculation as to why these game were so popular and what their long term effects would be. This segment from “Inside Edition” tries to get to to the bottom of it all.

Oh and the intro is by Bill “We’ll do it live” O’Reilly:

The “reporter” is a major tool, as is O’Reilly. “I had trouble with Lincoln Logs.” Well, you’d better go see a professional, because you’re probably brain damaged.

Inside Edition was about a year and a half too late with this story, but no one ever said they were the bastions of great reporting. It was great to see Howard Phillips in there. I remember him from Nintendo Power. I was always partial to the MAX controller over the Advantage, though. Those arcade joysticks made my hands hurt after a while.

I remember I had to call the game counselors ONCE. I couldn’t, for the life of me, find one of the avatars (or whatever they were called, it’s been over 20 years) in Ultima. It was the snake one. Impossible.

  2. Mario represents the best of what’s in each of us? I’d like to think of the best of myself as more of a Boogerman or Earthworm Jim.

I’m not sure sure you need “12 heart containers” to get the magic sword… do you? it might help, but I don’t recall it being a requirement.

  4. Doug says:

@JF – Yeah, that’s the pre-requisite for getting that sword. You need five to get the white sword and twelve for the magic.
